Disclaimer: lying sober is wrong and hurts people, making up silly-story lies while drinking is fun. Don’t expect sober people to believe them.
I bought a Singha Beer shirt at a second hand store. Back up in the Evergreen state it didn’t seem to garner much attention, but every time I wear it “out” in San Diego, somebody asks me if I’ve been to Thailand. And yes, I do wear it a lot, I think its a cool shirt.
Last friday I was waiting for a table at a restaurant when my boy MC pointed out another dude wearing the same shirt. I told him what I’ve just told you, and we began discussing the pros and cons of telling the truth vs lying about a make believe trip to Thailand. I said I’d lie in the future, but dude left without incident. The lie was going to revolve around heavy drinking and drug use, to explain why I couldn’t remember much about the country.
Later that evening, MC, his special lady, and myself were on the verge of having some Irish car bombs (after having a frank discussion about the offensive name of the drink, sorry Ireland) when same fellow as earlier approached me and asked if I’d ever been to Thailand. I choked and told the truth, but he’d never been to Thailand either. He had been given the shirt by somebody who went, and also did not enjoy telling strangers that he just had the shirt and had never been to its homeland. He also had downed a car bomb earlier in the night. We had a lot in common.
So lets all drink to guys like me and Matt (?), who wear touristy shirts from places we’ve never been. Great conversation starters.
