Sabernomics asked the blog-o-sphere how they would change the NBA. I put a comment in voting for 4 on 4 to open up room for team offense and calling the game to discriminate against one on one play. I’m not sure if 4 on 4 would have the desired effect since you’re losing a help defender.
I think widening the key would be helpful as well, and possibly an area under the hoop that offensive players can’t go in with the ball, but can receive the ball in if they’re already there (does that make sense? maybe too complicated). Limiting the allowed number of dribbles inside the three point line (three?) would also help in my goal of discouraging one on one play.
To improve competitive balance, I also propose imposing a height limit. Go to Barnes & Noble and buy the Wages of Wins if you don’t understand this one. I think 6′8″ or so should work well.
In honor of my dream of team oriented NBA hoops with constant motion and cuts to the basket, I propose a toast to Pete Carril and his Princeton offense.
